We love green food and green ingredients. In this blog, we find out all about one of favourite green foods and that’s avocado. We’ll find out more about this ingredient as well as sharing some classic green food. But first of all, let’s talk about the two avocados. There’s the classic Californian avocado which is the most common type. But there’s also the Florida variety.

So which is best? And what’s the difference? The Florida variety is larger than it’s Californian neighbour. And regardless of the time of the year and where you live, it’s common to find that the Florida variety is cheaper. So, that’s one thing the Florida variety has going for it.

Florida VS California Avocado

The larger Californian variety has a lime green skin and is commonly referred to as the slimcado. And that’s because when you take a look at the stats you will find that it has less fat.

But wow! Slimcado has 50% less fat. Just 10 grams compared to the 15 grams of the Californian variety. So how do you go about cooking with these very different animals?

Cooking With Florida Avocados

It’s not quite as easy as saying, well I prefer my recipes to be low fat, so now I know I’ll use the Florida slimcado – and save myself some money. Slimcados lend themselves well to some recipes and not others.

  • Perfect for salads – as they hold their shape better
  • Perfect for shakes – as you add a large amount and you can keep the calorie content down as well as the cost
  • Guacamole – not ideal as they are not creamy enough but you can add some mayo for creaminess

Cooking With Californian Avocados

The additional fat content of Californian avocados make them perfect for creamy guacamole. And we couldn’t write a blog post on avocados without a perfect guacamole recipe. So without further ado, here it is. Perfect guacamole with no need to add cream cheese or mayo.

Best Ever Guacamole

Serves 4

Ingredients

🥑 3 Californian avocados 

🥑 Juice of 1 lime 

🥑 1 teaspoon of sea salt 

🥑 25g of onion, 

🥑 3 tablespoons of chopped coriander leaves

🥑 2 plum tomatoes, diced 

🥑 1 teaspoon of garlic, minced 

🥑 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper 

Method

  1. Mash the avocados with the lime juice and salt in a bowl.

2. Stir in the remaining ingredients.

3. Chill for 1 hour before serving.
