Native to the Midwest, Whorled Milkweed grows almost anywhere & is a pollinator magnet, providing nectar to all bee varieties, hummingbirds, butterflies, & much more. Whorled Milkweed has very skinny, whorled leaves. There are clusters of approximately 20 flowers near the top of each plant. Whorled Milkweed can bloom anytime between July & September, which is later in the year than many other milkweeds. Please note, this species is rhizomatous so it is recommended to thin plants at the end of each season to prevent aggressive spreading Plant outdoors in fall after the first frost on a weed-free site & allow seed to overwinter. Gently press seeds down, but don’t cover. Water once, then leave them to sprout in the spring. Alternatively, you can cold stratify seeds by placing them on a damp paper towel, fold them over, place in a recloseable plastic bag, then keep them in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 weeks. Then start seeds inside 6 weeks before the last frost in spring. Don’t cover the seeds with soil. Keep seeds moist during germination. Transplant outside after the seedlings have four or five leaves.
