The Western Spicebush makes a stunning addition to any garden. in late spring, branch tips produce stunning maroon-brown flowers with a spicy scent. As the plant establishes, flowers can continue until fall. The bush grows to 9’/3 meters tall & wide, making an excellent screening hedge. It tolerates numerous conditions, including full sun & clayish soil, as long as it gets adequate water. Native to streamsides across Northern California, this beautiful species can be found in full bloom along nature trails. Come fall, & the leaves turn an attractive bright yellow before falling. Very beautiful! USDA Zones 6-10. 10 seeds per packet. Growing instructions: For all climates: The seeds store well, but are best sowed soon after purchase. Plant the seeds 1-3 deep in medium-sized pots (essential for a developed root system - they will not thrive if sowed in tiny pots) filled with loamy soil. The soil must be kept moist, but not overly so, as the seeds will rot. Place the pots in an area with bright, indirect light. This is best done in the spring, when temperatures are mild, & after the risk of frost. After 30-70 days, the seeds will germinate. Allow the seedlings to grow at least 6 tall before transplanting, as young plants struggle with root disturbance. Once they are 6+ tall, plant them in their permanent location (preferably part shade) before the end of summer. The Spicebush will need consistent moisture throughout its life to ensure success. Once established, the plant will grow very quickly. Flowers will appear in the second or third year. Western Spicebush Seeds | Calycanthus Occidentalis
