Ground husks of Persian walnut also called English walnut (lat. Juglans Regia). The main colorant is juglone which is a substantive dye so it can be used without a mordant for wool - this way color can be even darker. If wool is pre-mordanted with iron very deep chocolate brown shades can be achieved. Dye production: Green husks of Juglans Regia tree fruit are dried & processed into a powder. Dyeing: - Use 50 - 100 % WOF. You can use more for darker shades - in most cases, mordanting is not required, especially for wool. However, you may get different results with different mordants & additives. - For a deep brown experiment with iron mordant. - Mix walnut powder with warm water & add to your dye pot. Simmer for around 2 hours. Pour dye liquid through the sieve. Use the liquid for natural dyeing. - Save the remaining powder - you can extract more dye from it. - Add wet fibers into the cool liquid & simmer for 30-60 minutes. Let it cool. For darker shades, you can simmer for a longer time & then leave it to soak overnight or longer.
