Vintage Enamelled Stratton Powder Compact. This dates from the early 1950’s & comes with original pouch. Beautiful enamel on the front & engine turned on the reverse. Good Clasp & hinge. Inside the mirror has some wear around the edge & it needs some TLC & a good cleaning. Once it’s cleaned properly it will come up lovely. Some Historical information on Stratton Compacts: Stratton Compacts Stratton was founded in 1860 in England to make knitting needles under the name of Stratnoid & it wasn’t until the 1920’s that they changed their name to Stratton & started making compacts. By the 1930’s they were so successful they achieved 50% of the UK market share. Sadly they were bombed heavily during the war & had to close their factories & it wasn’t until after the war in the mid 1940’s that they tried to resume operations but as metal was scarce they struggled. They carried on & by the end of the 1940’s they had patented the self opening compact lid & by the 1950’s powder compacts were all the rage & Stratton became a world wide brand. Probably the most successful powder compact company by far they are still leading the markets today but on a smaller scale than in the 50’s & 60’s. The Stratton brand was relaunched by Widdop Bingham in 2014 although it is no longer British made.
