Watercolor painting of five doctors performing heart surgery by Alex Ross. This piece was the cover of a 1966 issue of Medical Times. The Medical Times was a monthly medical journal that ran run from approximately 1870-1990. Over the years the title changed & included Medical Times Journal for the Family Physician, Med Times, & Medical Times & Long Island Medical Journal. Alex Ross did several illustrations for the journal - the painting style is similar but the use of negative space is unique to this painting. Alexander Sharpe Ross (1908-1990) was originally from Scotland but moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the age of three in 1911 with his family. Later, he attended Carnegie Mellon University (at the time, it was called Carnegie Tech) taking night classes. After his attending university, he moved to New York to pursue his art career. There, he worked with Stevan Dohanos, Jon Whitcomb, & Frederick Smith, among others. Two years after moving to New York, he sold his first cover illustration to Good Housekeeping magazine. This would prove a fruitful relationship as he would continue to sell 130 covers to the magazine over the rest of his career. in addition, his illustrations appeared in The Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s, Cosmo, & The Ladies Home Journal, among others. As magazine illustrations declined in the 1960’s he switched to experimental paintings in watercolor & other mixed media which were exhibited regularly. He would go on to win many prizes for these including the Connecticut Watercolor Society award & the Saxe Foundation award, among others. His work can be found at the U.S. Air Force Art Collection, the National Academy of Design, & the New Britain Museum of American Art. Signed lower right. Board is 26.5 tall & 20 wide.
