Here is a vintage circular powder compact in chrome metal, with an attractive sandy yellow, burnt orange & black Art Deco geometric design on the lid. This looks very like a transfer design which became the accepted way to embellish these compacts around the late 60s / early 70s. SIZE & CONDITION:- This measures 6.3cms in diameter (2 1/2) & is still in good working condition, opening well & closing with a satisfying snap !! There is an original puff with this & a full powder refill within. This gives it away as a 1970s compact rather than a genuine 1930s one. Back in the Art Deco era, they were using loose powder with a sifter, & compacts often had an inner lid that prevented the powder from spilling everywhere when opened. The advent of the pressed powder refill meant that the sifter could be done away with & also the inner lid, which means they were much cheaper & quicker to produce. This one comes in its original cardboard stockroom box, with a design number stamped on it - 9501. Overall the condition is fairly good with a few scratches here & there, but this has been kept in the box & the powder has hardly been touched. I think this was probably sold with the powder in it. The compact is stamped with the word ‘Foreign’ on the hinge. This is a superb example of the Art Deco Revival trend that was going on in the late 1960s / early 1970s, & a great 1970s interpretation of the geometric 1920s/30s Art deco style. The whole trend was personified by the misty romantic fashion adverts for the ultra-trendy Biba emporium in Kensington High Street in London. in the UK.
