Here is an interesting find - a pretty powder compact, made of chrome with a faux tortoiseshell celluloid back & featuring a gorgeous 18th Century portrait of a society lady, with a huge picture hat bedecked with feathers on her powdered hair, & a beautiful white dress with a lacy portrait neckline & curls tumbling over her shoulders. The celluloid back is a rusty reddish brown colour & has that swirled effect that mimic tortoiseshell. The portrait on the lid is a paper print under a clear plastic cover, & has a somewhat green bias in the colouring. It’s very pretty & very vintage looking. There is an original sifter inside but no puff. The dating is probably from around the late 1940s as the use of celluloid was necessated by the commandeering of base metals for the war effort, by British & French alike, but the chrome interior suggests that this was easing by the time this was made.. This is so typically French in its use of an 18th Century Fragonard-style Romantic portrait, & a very charming piece of ephemeral cosmetics & beautyware from a time of great hardship for everyone, right across Europe. This powder compact measures 8cms x 8cms ( 3 1/8 x 3 1/8) & is a very atractive & unusual shape. I have no information regarding who manufactured this, but it is very unusual & very collectible. CONDITION This is in pretty good condition considering it is nearly 80 years old !! The mirror has a few scratch marks & is a bit loose. It is contained securely however within the chrome frame.- see my 5th & 6th photos. The painting reproduction has probably lost a little of its colour on the red side of the spectrum, as it’s very green, but is still very attractive. The clear plastic cover has a few brown marks on the inside but I really don’t fancy trying to remove it for cleaning - this is a specialist job, definitely !! This doesn’t really detract fromt he overall geneal attractiveness of this lovely compact.
