This delightful & very tactile powder compact is rectangular in shape & known as a ‘slab’. Brass case with a nautical theme. Salmon pink enamel background with 2 sailors central to the design & S.S. Strathaird written to top left corner. Base is horizontal lines. There are 2 patent numbers stamped on the bottom of the mirror surround ,562662 & 530653. Patent number 562662 was filed in January 1943 by Jarret Rainsford & Laughton, it was granted in 1944. It relates to the spring button on the hinge for the release of the inner flap. Marked Stratton & Made in England to mirror rim. The mirror retains the original label with instructions on how to open the inner lid. Release catch to open inner lid is located near the hinge to the rear, gently push back on lid & catch is released. Complete with original sifter & puff. The SS Strathaird was launched in 1931 & carried mail from Tilbury, Essex in England to Brisbane, Australia. The ship also did the occasional cruise. in 1939/40 the ship was requisitioned as a troop ship & took part in Operation Ariel. The powder compact is in good vintage condition, wear consistent with age. The enamel decoration has some flea bites to the enamel & there are a couple of very small dings on the righthand side. These can be seen when held in a certain light. Clear reflective mirror. All catches & hinges function as they should. Sifter & puff have remnants of powder. Light wear to brass case & gold tone.
