If you are considering how to add some style to your sustainable makeup or zero waste makeup routine, look no further than this vintage Elgin American Powder Compact. A compact like this one would make a wonderful special event gift - maybe for a bridesmaid or a bride. It’s the perfect something old gift! This vintage compact dates from the 1950s & appears to be either unused or very lightly used. The front of the compact has an engraved floral pattern of brushed silver tone flowers & leaves with a shiny gold background. The body of the compact is a brushed silver tone. There is a button on the side that opens the compact when you press it. From there, you open up the compact to see the mirror on one side & an interior lid on the other side. The inner lid is gold toned & beveled to hold a square puff. The lid is inscribed Elgin American Made in U.S.A. The lid opens with a small button to a powder reservoir. The reservoir originally held Elgin’s pressed powder refills. The interior dimension of the reservoir is about 57mm square & about 1-2mm deep. The compact is 2.75 square & a little over .25 thick. It is quite heavy & has a great hand feel. It comes with its original yellow felt case. CONDITION This compact appears to have never been used or very lightly used. The only sign of use is that you can still smell signs of the powder inside the reservoir. The smell is very faint & actually a bit lovely (it’s not a bad, musty smell in any way!). The finish on the exterior of the compact is in excellent condition. It does come with its original puff, which has some powder residue on the back. The button to open the compact works well & it opens, closes, & snaps smoothly. The mirror is clear & in great condition. It still has a sticker on the mirror indicating the model number & original price. USE When considering if you want to use a vintage compact for makeup in order to move towards a zero waste routine, you probably are wondering how you can actually fill it! The reservoir is very shallow, so I do not think refill pans that are available today will fit in it. Your best bet will be to use it for loose powder or to press your own inside of it.
