Strelitzia reginae is a Tropical or Tender perennial in the Strelitziaceae family. Some commonly known names are the crane flower, bird of paradise, or isigude in Nguni. A native to South Africa. This evergreen perennial is widely cultivated for its dramatic flowers. It grows to 6 & a half feet tall with leaves that are 3 feet long & a foot wide. The flowers are above the foliage at the tips of long stalks. The beak-like sheath from which the flower emerges is called the spathe. This grows perpendicular to the stem & gives the appearance of a bird’s head & beak sitting there. The flowers come out one at a time with 3 orange & three purple or white petals, which form a small pool for the sunbirds to drink. Then the pollen gets on the sunbird’s feet & is dispersed onto other plants. It is a low-maintenance plant. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade outside in warmer zones. It can be grown in containers & brought inside for the colder months. It can also be grown inside with adequate sunlight provided. It does like to be watered often & will grow best in rich soils & well-drained. Zones 10-11 Germination Soak seeds 24 hours. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds & lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 7-30 days. strelitzia Reginae | Bird Of Paradise Crane Flower 5 Seeds
