Spider Milkweed, also known as Green Milkweed, & Green Antelopehorn Milkweed, is one of the earliest spring blooming milkweeds with large yellow & green flowers & purple centers, blooming from May to June. As such, this is a great milkweed to plant for those early-migrating Monarchs. It can take a lot of heat so is very drought tolerant. Spider Milkweed is also a highly attractive host plant for Soldier & Queen Butterfly caterpillars & adults & serves as a nectar plant for many other butterflies & pollinators. Plant seeds in the autumn after the first frost. Gently press seeds down, but don’t cover. Water once, then leave them to sprout in the spring. Alternatively, you can cold stratify seeds by placing them on a damp paper towel, fold them over, place them in a recloseable plastic bag, then keep in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 weeks. Then start seeds inside 6 weeks before last frost in spring. Don’t cover the seeds with soil. Keep seeds moist during germination. Transplant outside after the seedlings have four or five leaves.
