Showy Milkweed grows a long taproot, so try to plant it where you know you want it to grow, because transplanting is very difficult. Indoor Sow: 6 - 8 weeks before last frost, harden off before transplanting outside (Plant on a cloudy day or in late afternoon to reduce transplant shock). Milkweed roots are a tap root & do not like to be disturbed, so plant in small peat pots that will decompose or transplant before the starters get more than 3 tall. Dampen your soil with a spray bottle full of water & place 1-2 seeds into each container. Sow seeds lightly on the top of the soil. You may press in gently but they need light to germinate so don’t bury them. Outdoor Sow: Sow seeds directly outside after last frost about 1/4 deep & 15 between plants or plant in the fall & let seeds go through a natural cold stratification process. Remove spent flowers to promote blooming. Remove foliage after the first hard frost in the Winter The pink flowers provide nectar for many different butterflies, not just the Monarch.
