Hand carved in central Scotland from alder wood, these wee spoons are ideal for measuring out or serving salt, spices or jam. The spoons are hand sanded to a smooth texture then de-whiskered to minimise roughing up when washed. They are finished with my own homemade treatment for wooden kitchenware, a food-safe blend of locally sourced beeswax & food-grade mineral oil, which I also have available for sale. Alder is a very much overlooked wood these days but once was very popular in cabinet making when it was known as Scottish mahogany. It is an interesting timber in that it bleeds when the live wood is cut. A pale red-brown sap issues forth from the end of the log. Primitive peoples used to even fear the alder due to this quality!
