Beautifully decorated talcum powder box. Dubarry’s Talcum Powder Inside the box there is an advertisement stating that Dubarry’s talcum powder ‘gives a satin-like smoothness to the skin’. Made in England. The box is empty. Originally there would have been a glass bottle containing ’the heart of a rose’ scented talc. The label on the talc bottle would match the label on the front of the box. Era: 1920’s - 1930’s This company has an interesting history & is not to be confused with the American company Du Barry. Madame Marie Jean du Barry (1741-93), mistress of Louis XV was guillotined at the height of the French Revolution. Her name was revived by 2 companies which does cause confusion for collectors, Du Barry (American) & Dubarry (English). The company Dubarry appears to have had other names during it’s history, Standard Tablet & Pill Company Ltd, Goldstone Laboratories & Dubarry Perfumery Co. Ltd. in 1923 Mr Pears who owned Standard Tablet & Pill Company emerged as the managing director of Dubarry. It appears that the company started in 1901 & went into liquidation in 1985. The box measures 9cms x 13.5cms x 3.5cms or 3.54 x 5.31 x 1.37. The box is in good vintage condition, with light handling wear. The decoration to the lid is in very good to excellent condition. The ‘heart of the rose label’ has some marks & a small piece missing. Overall in nice clean condition, & displays extremely well. This would make a lovely addition to a collection.
