It is a great medium sized near hardy (to -5C or slightly more) evergreen shrub to small tree with dark green lush leathery obovate/elliptic leaves. Ideal for a spot in the middle or back of the border or as part of an evergreen hedge. It does well in well drained but moist sites in full sun, but is quite tolerant of other soil types, sites & moisture. It can grow to around 10m high & 3m across, though often stays far smaller & are easily pruned as a hedge or small to medium shrub. The leaves are oval in shape with edges that curl under & measure up to 10cm (4’’) in length. They are leathery, hairless, & darker & shinier on the upper surfaces. The inflorescence is a cluster of Sweetly scented fragrant flowers occurring at the ends of branches. The flower has five white petals each about a centimetre long, occuring in late spring & summer. The fruit is a hairy, woody capsule about 1cm wide divided into three valves. Inside are black seeds in a bed of resinous pulp. Year long interest, great for pollinators & birds!
