Phormium tenax Varieties: Type species’, ‘Atropurpureum’, ‘Purpureum’ or ‘Variegata’, New Zealand Flax, Harakere, New Zealand Hemp, Hardy architectural evergreen Perennial, Beautiful Red Flowers, Excellent Colour & Structure for the Garden, UK FREE POST This auction is for 20, 30 or 60 seeds of either Phormium tenax ‘Type species’ (Normal Wild type, Photo 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), ‘Atropurpureum’ (Dark Purple leaves, Photo 6), ‘Purpureum’ (Purple/Brown Leaves, Photo 7) or ‘Variegata’ (Variegated Green/White/Yellow striped leaves, Photo 8, 9) or a mix (20, 30, 60 of each variety), home grown organically in the UK of this fully hardy clump forming architectural perennial from New Zealand & Norfolk Island. It is a great plant for adding to landscape & prairie type plantings, gravel, coastal & cottage gardens. It does well in drier well drained sites in full sun & should be planted near the back of the border, but is quite tolerant of other soil types & moisture. It grows to around 4m high & 2.5m across, forming clumps with long strap like leaves up to 2m long. It produces tall flowering spikes (up to 4m) with panicles of 4cm long dramatic red-orange tubular flowers in summer. This plant has a long history of cultivation for its fibres which can be used for making rope, sails & other textiles. The flowers are often visited by birds & other pollinators.
