Oenothera caespitosa is a biennial/perennial in the Onagraceae family. A native to Central & Western United States. Some common names are tufted evening primrose, desert evening primrose, rock-rose evening primrose, or fragrant evening primrose. It produces toothed, or lobed rosette leaves around 15 inches long. This species will bloom at night. It grows to 4 inches high, making it great for a rock garden. The flowers are in bloom from late spring until early fall. They have 4 petals that open at dusk & will sometimes change to a light pink by the morning. Host plant for the sphinx moth. It prefers to grow in full sun in a drought-tolerant environment. Birds, bees, & butterflies visit it. Zones 3-8 Germination Use 100 grit sandpaper by placing seeds on sandpaper & gently rubbing the seeds in a circular motion. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds & lightly cover with a medium. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain a temperature around 65-75F. Germination 7-30 days.
