Musa Sikkimensis Red Tiger banana, is a species of seeded banana. From monsoonal mountain forests in extreme eastern India on the border to Myanmar comes this colourful variety of the famous Darjeeling banana. While just as easy to grow & just as cold tolerant as the regular M. sikkimensis, young plants have a most stunning pattern to their leaves, with dark purple zebra stripes on the upper surface & a reddish purple below. Make an excellent large tub plant Tender Perennial (to 0C) - must be protected from frost Height: up to 1.8 m Position: Sun in well drained soil or Shrub Compost. Sowing the seeds Sow anytime of year after soaking the seeds for 24 hours in lukewarm water. Use a peat based seed compost & sow 2.5cm deep. After sowing, seal the seed container inside a polythene bag in order to keep the compost moist. Germination is slow & erratic & can take 1-6 months at 20-25oC. As each seed germinates, transfer it to a 9cm pot of good free draining compost taking care not to damage the fragile roots. Pot on as required, the larger the container the larger the plant will grow. Always use a good quality seed compost. Please note we pack the majority of our seeds by volume so the number of seeds indicated is only an approximation. Seeds are packed into Glassine envelopes or zip-lock bags to keep them fresh.
