Here is a very unusual large rectangular powder compact in shiny chrome metal with a brass interior from the Monte-Carlo brand. The lid features a rather three dimensional figure in early 19th century red riding habit & tricorn hat, riding a hobby horse, which was the pre-cursor to the early bicycles. Wheels but no pedals !! He & the hobby horse are all in gold white & red enamelled metal & applied to the front as a raised figure. A very unusual & interesting addition to your Art deco powder compact collection. Inside there is an original rectangular sifter inside the brass powder well. The name ‘Monte Carlo’ is on the rim at the front just above the catch, with the initials MM on both sides. What’s very likely is that the name Monte-Carlo is the brand name, & the initials MM stand for the maker’s name, whoever that is. CONDITION There is a small ding to the chrome lid on the left hand edge, but nothing serious. See photo 1. The main issue here though, is with the mirror. The mirror is not in great condition, having rather a large quantity of spotting across the glass. See photo no.6. However, you could probably get this replaced reasonably easily by a vintage powder compact repairer, if you are of a mind to actually use this. If it is going into your collection, then you probably don’t need to bother, unless you like to have your powder compacts in the best conditon they can be in. I have not been able to find out anything about this manufacturer, so if anyone has any information ragarding the Monte Carlo brand name or the initials MM please get in touch.
