Here is a very pretty item from the 1950s/60s. A circular convertible powder compact from the Mascot brand, with a pretty design of peachy-pink roses against a teal-blue & white striped background on the lid, & an engine-turned concentric circles design on the reverse. This compact measures 7.3cms wide & roughly 1.3cm thick in the centre (that’s just under 3 x 1/2 thick) & has intact hinges & clasps on the exterior & the interior, which are all in good working order. I love this for its gorgeous quirky 1960s flower design, which is so typical of that era. The mirror has its original labels still attached with the Mascot signature & the instructions on how to put the pressed powder in & get it out when it’s finished. CONDITION: - This compact is in excellent unused condition even though it has lost its original cover long ago. It has the original unused sifter & puff inside, which dates it to the 1950s/1960s. Around this time they invented the cream powder refill which didn’t need a sifter & could just drop in to the powder well, & be levered out again when it was used up. The era of the loose powder was at an end the minute someone came up with that idea, although an awful lot of compacts were designed to use either as the beauty companies hedged their bets with how popular this new idea was going to be. Hence the sifter included with this. This is a nice little collector’s item, & unusual in that it has never been used. Please see my photos !! MASCOT This was the compact trademark of AS Brown of England. They were manufacturing compacts as early as the 1940s & signed ASB. They began using the Mascot tradename in 1950. They were very famous for compacts shaped as handbags which were manufactured during the 1950s. The AS Brown company bought the Kigu Co in 1977, & continued producing compacts into the 1980s.
