Leca stands for Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate. It is becoming quite a popular growing medium for plants such as rooting Hoya plants. It eliminates soil, which since coming up on spring, will eliminate fungus gnats & other critter demons that live in soil which like to munch on roots & destroy plants. This clean & odor-free medium is reusable & provides excellent aeration for the plant roots to get plenty of oxygen. Best of all, you can reuse them over & over again. Leca are now being used a lot in aquaponics, hydroponics, or just plain growing medium - eliminating soil all together. Also they can be used as soil toppers as well as floral flower arrangements to help stabilize & position flowers & decorations in the floral spray. Great for terrariums, ground floor for reptile & amphibians homes. You can also crush the Leca balls into rough powder to cover seeds, mist & place in sunlight as a great growing medium for germination. Just don’t let them dry out. Also, do not use a pot with drainage hole for Leca as it is the wicking action of the Leca to provide water for your plants. We have pre-washed the Leca balls twice in pH neutral water. You need to re-wash in pH neutral water once received in preparation for your plant. I recommend washing them a 3rd time, letting them soak for a couple hours - it will be very beneficial in the end doing this & save alot of hassle. If you are unfamiliar with pH, Leca, propagation, please research. There are excellent YouTube & documentation on the web. It sounds intimidating but once you get the hang of propagation & pH control, you will be surprised as to how well you can grow plants. We use pH neutral water in our water hydroponics for the leca balls in order to lessen the stress on plants & make it easier for them to root. 3 ounce weight of Leca equates to about a little more than a cup of material.
