Though many of his paintings concern traditionally Japanese subjects, particularly chickens & other birds, his painting style & methods were heavily influenced by Western painting. Most of Jakuch’s works were in the form of hanging scrolls, painted in a combination of Western & traditional Japanese methods & styles. A very common theme among his work is birds, in particular chickens & roosters, though several of his more famous paintings depict cockatoos, parrots, & phoenixes. One of his most ambitious & famous works, of which this is one, is known as the Pictures of the Colorful Realm of Living Beings . Begun around 1757 & not finished until 1765, the Pictures are a set of thirty hanging scrolls created as a personal offering to the Shkoku-ji temple.
