This colorful butterhead is always sweet & tender, rarely bitter, quick maturing & very cold tolerant! This lettuce also tolerates heat more than most. Emerald & bronze frilled leaves are crisp & delicious & grow on loose heads that can weigh up to a pound. Can even be grown in a container. Ready to cut in 55 days. The Mennonites brought this variety with them from Germany & Holland over 200 years ago, although it’s thought to be an heirloom lettuce from the Siberian region of Russia. ~ planting ~ When to sow outside: RECOmmENDED. 2 to 4 weeks before average last frost, & successive sowings thereafter every 3 weeks until 2 weeks before the first fall frost. USDA zone 8 or warmer: also in fall for winter harvest. When to start inside: 6 weeks before average last frost & in summer when soil temperatures are too warm outside to germinate lettuce seed. Lettuce seed requires moderate soil temperatures to germinate (70o F is ideal), & grows best in mild weather. ~ harvesting ~ Harvest about 45-50 days after planting.
