Sur L’Herbe is a print from Ftes Galantes, which is a series of poems by Paul Verlaine illustrated by pochoir color prints created by George Barbier. The series is very rare highly sought after by collectors & only 1,200 were issued in 1928. Barbier’s artistic style is recognized by a characteristically elegant, stylized illustrations depicting various romantic & whimsical scenes. Each print is created in great detail with a magnificent use of color. Barbier was one of the great French illustrators of the early 20th century & was renowned for his fashion plates in leading contemporary magazines, including the Gazette du Bon Ton & Vogue. His artistic style is readily identifiable by his elegant, stylized line. He was the most sought-after costume designer in Paris, recognized as the theatrical artist who better than any other had captured the mood of the age (Gordon Ray).
