Edwardian Footed kidney shaped serving caddy, 1800. Edwardian Footed kidney shaped serving caddy, in the 1760s-1800, the caddy spoon was created as a unique & beautiful accessory for preparing tea in Europe & America. Tea leaves were kept in a tea caddy, a special box designed to keep the leaves fresh & attractively presented. These were often locked at other times as tea was an expensive & precious commodity. Larger Tea Caddies were made throughout the 19th Century, incorporating two lidded smaller caddies positioned either side of a fine cut glass bowl. Opinions vary about the use of this bowl; some say it was used for mixing the two different teas (green & black); others say it was a sugar bowl (which I go with). This is in excellent condition.
