Earl Grey Imperial is a blend of six classic teas from China, Darjeeling, & Assam from India & an Oolong from Formosa, all delicately scented with the finest natural oil of Bergamot. It is a fine blend given that it uses so many teas from different locations to provide its distinctive taste & aroma. A China Earl Grey is usually only be made from tea grown in China. in this case this product is from China from one of the better known blending establishments who import tea from India & Taiwan to make their distinctive Imperial blend. Tea flavoured with bergamot, which was used to imitate the more expensive types of Chinese tea, has been known in England at least since the 1820s. in 1837 there is a record of court proceedings against Brocksop & Co. who were found to have supplied tea artificially scented, and, drugged with bergamot . A ‘Grey’s Tea’ is known from the 1850s, but the first known published references to an ‘Earl Grey’ tea are advertisements by Charlton & Co. of Jermyn Street, London, in the 1880’s The Earl Grey blend, or Earl Grey’s Mixture, is assumed to be named after the 2nd Earl Grey, Charles who was the British Prime Minister in the 1830’s & author of the reform bill of 1832. The story goes that he received a diplomatic gift of tea flavoured with bergamot & liked it so much that he did a great deal to popularise it. As Lord Grey never set foot in China it is unlikely that the story of a Mandarin blending it for him especially is true. Equally Bergamot was unknown in China at the time so its hardly likely that it was traditional blend there. Whatever the story & the romance behind it all, it is known that Lady Grey used it abundantly at her getherings as a refreshment. It is only in recent times that the traditional black tea Earl Grey blend has been joined by green tea & oolong tea varieties. Earl Grey Imperial Tea From China - 100 Grams
