50 Black Cumin seeds Black cumin, (Nigella sativa), also called black seed, black caraway, Roman coriander, kalonji, or fennel flower, annual plant of the ranunculus family (Ranunculaceae), grown for its pungent seeds, which are used as a spice & in herbal medicine. The black cumin plant is found in southwestern Asia & parts of the Mediterranean & Africa, where it has a long history of use in diverse culinary & medicinal traditions. The seeds have an aroma similar to fennel & have a pungent flavour somewhat similar to nutmeg, though the plant is not related to either. The seeds are commonly roasted & ground as a spice & are widely used in India, the Middle East, & parts of north Africa to season curries, rice, breads, & sweet confections. Black cumin is also important in traditional medicine in many places & is an esteemed herbal remedy for a wide variety of ailments. The plant is sometimes grown as an ornamental for its attractive flowers & is closely related to love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena), a more common ornamental. GROWING INSTRUCTIONS (USDA Zones: 5-10) Start the Cumin seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last expected frost for transplanting outdoors. Or, after the last frost, directly plant the Black Cumin herb seeds outdoors. Sow in full sun to partial shade, 3-4 seeds per plant, 1/8 deep, 5-9 apart & keep moist until germination. Some gardeners sow the Nigella Sativa seeds in several successive weeks in order to keep a longer season. Black Cumin plants need a sunny location in the herb garden & well-drained soil. Water the herb plants regularly during prolonged periods of dry weather. After the seed heads begin to dry, cut the stems, tie them together & place the seed heads in a brown paper bag. Hang the stems upside down in a warm well-ventilated place until the herb seeds are done drying. Place the seeds in an airtight container.
