Coleus needs sunlight to germinate. Work & moisten the soil with water before planting the seeds. These are tiny seeds that can wash away easily! Scatter or gently press seeds on the surface of a fine, damp seedling mix, & water them with a gentle mist. As soon as seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light on a sunny windowsill or grow seedlings 3-4 inches beneath fluorescent plant lights turned on 16 hours per day, off for 8 hours at night. Raise the lights as the plants grow taller. Keep the soil moist at 65-85 degrees. Coleus can benefit with bottom heat. Transplant hardened-off seedlings to the garden after the frost. If planted outside, you can transplant indoors in the Fall & return to the outdoors in the Spring. When they are about 2 1/2 tall, transplant them into individual pots. 2-3 days in, begin fertilizing them every 2 weeks with fertilizer. Nitrogen is key in helping develop those deep colors. To help with bushy growth, pinch off the top inch of the plant when they have 6 true leaves. & continue to monitor & pinch off the top flowering stalks to keep the plant growing. You can let it go to flower in the Fall if you decide not to bring indoors as a houseplant.
