Cassia roxburghii is a tree/tropical perennial in the Fabaceae family. It is native from Sri Lanka to southern India & also southern Asia. Some common names include Roxburgh’s cassia, Red Cassia, & Ceylon senna. It can grow to 30 feet tall & wide. The branches spread way out & droop as well. They can be covered with red, orange, & pink flowers clustered together from late spring until early fall. The leaves are a foot long with 20 or so paired leaflets. It prefers to grow in full sun to light shade but may not bloom as much with the full sun. Once established, it will have regular water needs. Water once a week until 3 feet tall. It is a fast grower & will bloom fairly quickly from seed. Zones 9-11 Germination With a nail file, rub seeds until you break through the outer coat. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium & cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Keep temperatures around 75-85F. Germination is in 4-30 days.
