This relatively compact but fast-growing oriental-looking tree bears extremely beautiful, fragrant, striped pink, five petalled orchid-like flowers. The branches are clad with large, deeply two-lobed leaves. Native to South China & south east Asia, it thrives outdoors in such places as Hawaii, coastal California, southern Texas, & Florida. Although the tree can stand a small amount of frost it will also do well in a conservatory. Very easy to grow from seed Half Tender Perennial (to 0C) - must be protected from frost Height: up to 1.8 - 3 m Position: Sun in well drained soil or Shrub Compost. Sowing the seeds Sow anytime of year soaking in water for up to 12 hours. will do best in a propagator. Use a peat based seed compost & sow 1.5cm deep. After sowing, seal the seed container inside a polythene bag in order to keep the compost moist. Germination is slow & erratic & can take 4 - 6 weeks at 20-25oC. As each seed germinates, transfer it to a 9cm pot of good free draining compost taking care not to damage the fragile roots. Pot on as required, the larger the container the larger the plant will grow. Always use a good quality seed compost. Please note we pack the majority of our seeds by volume so the number of seeds indicated is only an approximation. Seeds are packed into Glassine envelopes or zip-lock bags to keep them fresh.
