Select from drop down list for examples of each variety. Home grown organically in the UK of this fully hardy clump-forming perennial, native to upland areas of Central & Eastern Europe. It is often found in meadows, grasslands, woodland glades in damp, rocky areas often on calcaereous soils. It is a great plant for adding to cottage gardens, prairie type plantings, woodland, walled gardens & rockeries. It does well in moist but well drained sites in full sun or shade at the front to middle of the border, but is quite tolerant of other soil types & moisture. It grows to around 60cm (24’’) high. The stem is erect & glabrous, with little branches & few leaves. The basal leaves have a long petiole 10-20cm (3.9-7.9’’), 3 to 7 lobes & toothed segments. Size: 8-15cm (3.1-5.9’’). The cauline leaves are generally two, sessile, amplexicaul & lanceolate-shaped with a trilobed apex. The inflorescence is umbrella-shaped, 2-3cm (0.79-1.18’’) in diameter. The floral bracts are numerous (10-20), 10-18mm (0.39-0.71’’) long, reddish, sometimes white with acuminate apex. The small flowers are greenish-white with reddish shades. The central ones are hermaphrodite, while the external ones are male. The petals are five, white or slightly reddened, while the stamens are five & much longer. Size of the flowers: about 1mm. The flowering period extends from June through September & the flowers are much loved by a wide variety of pollinators!
