Amomum maximum Java Cardamom A medium-sized, vigorous ginger, that produces clusters of leafy shoots to about 3 m (10 ft.) tall with stunning red bases. The lovely white flowers appear in dense clusters from compact inflorescences at ground level for several months. Apart from being a great ornamental for warm temperate the unopened flower heads can be used in curries & the seed pods are a good substitute for black cardamom, even though not quite as aromatic. Sowing the seeds Sow indoors anytime soak in fresh water for 12 hours. sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost do not cover the seed to deep. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil - vermiculite mix. Propagate. Ideal temp. 20-25oC. Germination may take 4 - 8 weeks. although some may take very much longer so please be patient. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to individual pots, pot on as required. Plant out & grow in a large container . Always use a good quality seed compost.
