These are American plum (Prunus americana) seeds that I collected & processed in late summer of 2022. I’m offering packs of 20 & 100. Please see the end of this description for storage guidelines. American plum has delicious, sweet pulp & thick, tart skin. in addition to eating them raw, the fruit makes excellent fruit leather, jellies & preserves. American plum is also excellent for wildlife: plum thickets offer great protective shelter, & the fruit & seeds are eaten by white-tail deer, raccoons, squirrels, & many other species of birds & mammals. American plum is one of the first shrubs to bloom in the spring. It’s a shrub or small tree 3-8 m (10-24 ft) tall, & usually forms thickets. The branches are sometimes spiny. Leaves are alternate narrow to wedge-shaped, 1-5 inches long somewhat long-pointed, sharply & often doubly toothed. The upper leaf surface is shiny green & the lower surfaces are slightly hairy. Buds are red-brown, mostly about 1/8 inch in length. Leaf scars are not abnormally enlarged. Flowers are white, three-five inch clusters, appearing March - May. Fruits are red & yellow, usually 7/8 to 1 1/4 inches, seed are somewhat flattened & ripen June - October. STRATIFICATION & GERMINATION: American plum requires a 3 - 4 month period of cold, moist storage in order germinate in springthis is called stratification. This is best accomplished by planting the seeds in fall, or by storing the seeds outdoors over winter in an animal-resistant container filled with moist growing material, such as woodchips, sawdust, peat moss, or sand. How I stratify & grow seeds: The containers I use are 3 or 5 gallon buckets with several holes drilled in the top & bottom to allow for drainage & air circulation. I put a shallow layer of woodchips on the bottom of the bucket, followed by a layer of seeds, followed by another layer of woodchips. I repeat this process until the bucket is filled. Over winter I keep this container in a sheltered outdoor space like a shed or garage. When the ground is mostly thawed in spring, I sow the seeds in raised garden beds.
