Allium acutiflorum is found naturally across the Mediterranean & Black Sea coasts to Asia Minor. Originally collected in Northwestern Crete, Greece. Allium commutatum is found on coastal cliffs in the Mediterranean, from Algeria & Corsica in the west to Turkey in the east. Originally collected in Northwestern Crete, Greece. Allium sphaerocephalon is found only in the Avon Gorge in the UK, across Europe with the exception of Scandinavia, the Netherlands & the Baltic states to North Africa & Asia Minor. This form was originally collected from Umbria, Italy. These make great bulbs for adding to prairie type plantings, cottage or coastal gardens, rockeries, meadows, bulb frames or alpine houses. Saesonally drought tolerant. They can easily self seed & can be sown any time in a well draining mix, though cold stratification may improve germination. Allium acutiflorum With large pink-purple drumstick flowers which add a different dimension to cottage borders, prairie or other plantings. It does well in drier well drained sites in full sun at the front of the border, but is quite tolerant of other soil types & moisture. It grows to around 40cm high & 30cm across, forming ~15cm long linear leaves, tapering towards the tip & produces dense umbels of around 40 narrowly-bell shaped pink-purple flowers, long lasting summer blooms, followed by long lasting seed heads.
