200 YEARS OLD. AUTHENTIC FINE COPPER ENGRAVING from the 1800s. Carlina acaulis, the stemless carline thistle, dwarf carline thistle, or silver thistle, is a perennial dicotyledonous flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, native to alpine regions of central & southern Europe. The specific name acaulis (New Latin for without a stem, from Latin caulis stem or stalk) & common names are descriptive of the manner in which its flower head rests directly upon a basal leaf rosette. Taken from Flore mdicale by Chaumeton. The Flore Mdicale is one of the most important French books on the study of medicinal boards in the nineteenth century. It gives to read the description, the history, as well as the use & the virtues of the plants. The plants are represented in their entirety, accompanied by details of their flowers & their seeds.
